This episode of The Art of Being Queer Podcast features Australian artist Benedict. We discuss their latest releases "Warzone" Oh Fool" and hear the inspiration behind the tracks.
Hailing from Melbourne, Australia, Pop-alt artist, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist
Benedict translates experiences of heartbreak, love, social observation and justice into her
melodic artistry. Echoing a sound that falls in-between the lines of Kate Bush and Prince,
the singer is soon to send waves through the battlefield with latest offering ‘Warzone’, set
for release on Friday 31st July, 2020. Growing up in a musical atmosphere, this Australian born artist eschewed a regular
childhood in pursuit of mastering multiple instruments. Nurtured by her mother, a gifted
musician and singer herself, Benedicts’ journey as a prolific songwriter started at the ripe
age of five years old. Cutting her teeth on many influences which include; David Bowie,
Janis Joplin, Madonna and Queen, Prince, MJ; the singer began to mould her own vocal
stylings and writing.
In between music, Benedict has spent time working with youth and communities. One of her
most challenging times was spent on the frontline working as a prison guard. It broke her
heart watching, as she named them, “the forgotten people” from an everyday community be let down by the system. The pain. Their stories. As a humanitarian and a person who is passionate about equality and social justice, her desire runs even deeper to be a voice for all who aren’t heard! All communities. All people.
After a long time of working behind the scenes on other projects and writing and touring
Benedict took time out to develop and write her current project.
Layered with haunting sirenic vocals and a crisp pulsating melody, upcoming track ‘Warzone’
sees Benedict project a nostalgic 80s/90s pop influence through her sound. Her gracious
vocals robustly explode with such ease. Produced by Australian producer Dean Tuza, the
new number explores the many different relationships that an individual will experience, and
the life lessons that each one brings. Focusing on the fact that some relationships are like a
warzone, the new number emboldens the strength to find self-worth through dark times,
resulting in the ultimate victory.
Discussing her new single, Benedict tells us: “My single 'Warzone' is about many different
relationships we have over time. Relationships with partners, friendships, family, government,
religion. Learning the paradigms of these things and how they can change very quickly from positive to negative. Trusting and loving when you only receive narcissism and gaslighting in return. Some relationships are warzones that can break us down mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually. It is about the loneliness and pain that you take on then healing from past hurts and breathing your truth. As each human is unique and special it is about stepping out and trusting your heart and your goodness and fighting for your life. To me the most important thing is to become stronger and be your true self no matter what the consequences and live in your full truth as well as love others for their differences and unique selves.”
