Tonight's queer artist feature is Gerardo Castro
I’ve created images rooted in ethnicity and gender as well as culturally dominant fantasies about masculinity and sexuality that have escaped the trappings of popularized constructions of Latino identity. In my work, I use the body, consciously or not, to call attention to the Art and artifice of the construction of identity. My work illustrates the multiplicity of the Black and Brown experience; unequivocally black, emphatically brown figures posing in wallpaper like interiors, the color and compositions celebrating the visual texture of my Latino culture - claiming of the Latino identity as a means of empowerment (whether social, political, personal). I seek to uncover the hidden culture of machismo, a conflict between two identities; being gay and Latino: a tension between identity and reality that can be incredibly detrimental to the Latino community; the tragedy of machismo is that a man is never quite man enough.
