@johnnyxpolly - The Art of Being Queer - Artist Feature

Tonight’s queer artist feature is @johnnyxpolly

Artist Statement:

My name is John-Paul and “POLLY” when referring to my drag self. Furthermore, “Polly” is the style that I like to draw in.  This style consists of a drastic change of the body that isn’t for the faint of heart. Usually, it involves creating the most devilish and ghoulish persona I can possibly think of that was inspired by someone I look up to. This usually uses the motifs of enlarged yet pointed eyes, snatched nose and lips, gigantic forehead, skinny neck and (my favorite) broad shoulders.

This composition comes from a very near and dear place in my heart. Growing up, I’ve always loved the “freaks” and “weirdos” of the world. These beautiful people usually are drag queens, Instagram MUA’s, 2000’s celebrities and plastic surgery icons. I could never fully except in myself that I was going to live a simple life of “going to college, working 9-5 and building a family”. That’s so boring! Granted, people can live how they want, but I’ve always wanted to make something of myself that was unconventional.

These drawings that I make help me share my ecstatic voice and perspective with others in my queer community and also with my family. In thus doing so, I am able to connect with anyone to show them my appreciation.

I’m very lucky to be where I am. These little drawings just push me to live more authentically.
