@lemonhousetheatre - WILLOW - LONDON PERFORMANCE - The Art of Being Queer Feature

Tonight's fabulous queer artist feature is @lemonhousetheatre

Willow sees protagonist Gabi chats to the audience about her break-up with girlfriend Lottie, adopting different formats from a game-show style to a Ted Talk to also seeing scenes from Gabi and Lottie’s relationship play out. Willow asks how do we tell our own stories, looking at how being certain and being truthful aren’t always the same thing, and what happens when someone you love doesn’t play the part you expect.

Though it is necessary to share the experience of coming out, and the difficulties of this, through art, I've recently seen a lot of queer TV, movies & theatre that focuses on trauma and I wanted to make a show with two queer, female leads where their sexuality was incidental to the plot, neither character is defined by this and we never see them struggle with their sexuality.

This play will also be part of double bill with Lemon House Theatre's other show Different Sand, which follows the story of two British-Algerian sisters. Both shows are on 8th, 9th, 15th and 16th of September, with Different Sand starting at 7pm and Willow at 8.30pm (with a break in between!) People can either come along to one show for £10 or buy a ticket to both for £15.

More About Lemon House Theatre

Lemon House Theatre is a new theatre company rooted in the idea of collaboration. The company was created as a way to build a community hub where artists felt supported in taking risks and experimenting, with the aim of Lemon House Theatre being to question what theatre is, who makes it, and who it’s for.

Their first event was the scratch night MIXED TAPE // VOLUME ONE in July 2019, which staged rehearsed readings of four short plays by writers who identified as mixed race/dual heritage. This night was a celebration not just of this work, but also of artists who are too often underrepresented on the stage.

Lemon House Theatre is run by Co-Artistic Directors Samia Djilli and Jennifer Cerys. Samia is Assistant Producer at Tamasha Theatre Company, and has worked with Kali Theatre Company on their inaugural Discovery Programme, and produced short nights at the Royal Court and Theatre 503. Jennifer is a graduate of the Soho Theatre’s Writers’ Lab and has had her work staged at the King’s Head Theatre, VAULT Festival, Betsey Trotwood Theatre & the Etcetera Theatre. Earlier this year, she was also chosen to be part of The S+K Project’s artist development scheme for underrepresented writers.

Make sure to follow the artist and The Art of Being Queer for regular queer content!
