Tonight's fabulous queer artist feature is @pastelpapi
Artist Statement:
Pastel Papi is a 25-year-old artist based in California. He started creating work with queer themes just after high school, with his first muses found on Tumblr.
In the beginning he didn’t share his work online. He was inspired to do so after discovering other queer artists online. Some of the artists that captured his attention were @ccimoroni12 and @tomtaylorillustrated who had managed to make a small career out of drawing beautiful men.
Pastel Papi works primarily in digital mediums with his app of choice being Procreate. Reflecting on the early days of sharing he says:
“‘Somehow it happened that I was getting paid by friends to draw them, and boy, were those first few drawings terrible! As time went on I kept getting paid for more drawings. I can only assume I’ve gotten better but you should really ask my followers.’”
Pastel Papi has also worked with artists like Azealia Banks and Victor ‘Velo’ Cruz.
‘Working with Azealia was actually a completely different experience because I had never done something like that before. We worked on a soap box design titled Muscle Mike. ‘It was very challenging just because Azealia has always been a bit of a perfectionist. Getting the final product took a little longer than normal. I still feel proud something I worked on is out there. I’d love the opportunity to work with her again.’
