RuPaul's DragCon UK - The Art of Being Queer

Last weekend London got a highly anticipated event, the first-ever RuPaul's Drag Con U.K.

Superfans gathered at Olympia London for a weekend of performance, panels and of course to meet their favorite queens.

Queens from both the U.S. and U.K. shows were all serving looks that were tens across the board. Here are some of our favorite images captured for The Art of Being Queer.

We caught Crystal from Drag Race U.K. backstage to ask about their first time doing drag; “it was a burlesque piece that I did with my sister, I looked a hot mess! It really went from there and now here we are”. We also asked what was one thing she didn’t expect when signing up to Drag Race? Her answer - “unsolicited dick pics”.

One of the highlights from the weekend was the live performance of “Break Up, (Bye Bye)” by The Frock Destroyers. The track made famous from the first U.K. season hit the charts earlier this year followed by a petition for them to represent Britain in the Eurovision Song Contest.

Virgin Extravaganza looked phenomenal as did their Merch. The design was created by @demontier who featured in The Art of Being Queer Exhibition. Extravaganza also took to the main stage to perform a selection of their tongue in cheek tracks.

Other performances over the weekend included The Vivienne, Scardy Kat, Cheryl Hole, and many more. The Vivienne and Baga Chipz also performed as their iconic impersonations of Donald Trump and Margaret Thatcher. In the opening, Donald greeted Margaret by “grabbing her by the pussy” before performing a hilarious dance routine.

RuPaul did a DJ set on both days of the convention. Following this fans flocked over to the merch store for a chance to meet Ru and to get their idol's autograph.

All of the queens had a beautiful collection of Merch. Other stores within the convention sold everything a drag queen could want. From makeup, wigs, and costume to artwork, teeth whitening, and fans.

A final surprise for the weekend meeting the beautiful Vanessa Williams after filming the Frock Destroyers performance from Ru’s DJ booth.

The energy inside Olympia was electric and the whole weekend was a lot of fun. We are keeping our fingers crossed for another Drag Con next year and can’t wait for the upcoming seasons of Drag Race!
